Not Your Average: Joe Scudda Interview

He’s been holding it down for a while now being the person you go to if you need a monster 16-bar verse. But now, it’s time for him to shine on his own. We talk to Joe Scudda about his new project, the car accident and why Bumpy Knuckles deserves his name.
MB:Tell us about your new project.
JS:New project is called Not Your Average Joe. It started out as a EP I was gonna give people till august when my solo album Fashionably Late drops. But I had so many songs and they were sounding so good to me we just said fuck it, lets smash with this one. So we put 14 tracks on it. Statik Selektah mixed it and there you have it. I think it’s dope and I’m pretty proud of the finished project.
MB:What’s next for you right now?
JS:Just trying to promo as much as I can for the project and then getting ready to put Fashionably Late out later this year!
MB:What’s going on with a tour? What happened with the accident. Yall okay?
JS:We were all out on the road for a couple weeks doing shows….killing!! Every show was good, good people. So we were leaving Boston on the way to Vermont in the snow when we spun out of control and hit a guard rail. We then got t-boned by a 18 wheeler! SHIT WAS GNARLY AS HELL!!! But everybody walked away from it….we are all blessed
MB:You have been blessed to work with so many great producers. Is there anyone that you would like to work with that you haven’t yet?
JS:Well i have worked with Alchemist, Evidence, Pete Rock, Don Cannon, and a host of other cats….but still havent worked with Premo yet…and we talk about it everytime we see each other. I’m just happy to know all these guys and have a chance to work with people I respect
MB:Compared to when you first came on the scene, what do you think is different about getting your music out there as opposed to now?
JS:Well the internet blog age is at its all time high right now. No more mom and pop record stores. It’s the microwave age now. When you put something out it seems to be good for a week, then people look at you like, “OK what else you droppin.” I’m like DAMN! What don’t you chew on this first before you start to eat something else.
MB:What do you love most about the industry and what do you hate the most?
JS: I love getting to make music. I love meeting people on the same shit as I’m on. I hate the now factor. It’s like “I want the new shit NOW NOW NOW!” Nobody lets stuff sink in anymore.
MB:Name some memorable moments from past projects you worked on.
JS:I got so high while recording Bring Yall Back off Pete Rock’s last album it took me forever to get my rhyme down. I felt like a idiot. I was thinkin’ “damn…Pete probably lookin at me crazy” but I think he was higher than me so it didnt matter (lol).
MB:You say on Every Man that you have something to prove. What else do you feel you have to prove with your music and to who?
JS:I have alot to still prove to myself! I feel like the Not Your Average Joe was a step in that direction in letting people know what I’m about and that I deserve a spot among the dope artists out there.
MB:Random question: What happened at the Statik Selektah party with Bumpy Knuckles and that random dude? (did you see the pic with Bumpy fist clinched about the drop the hand of God on that dude?)
JS:I was there! I was 10 feet away from it and saw the whole thing unfold and go down! Lets just say…..I saw why they call him Bumpy Knuckles…..and…the name fits. -PJ
