Album Review: Murs & 9th Wonder-“Fornever”

If you can find another artist in hip-hop that works harder than MURS, I dare you to make him appear. Revolutionizing west coast indy hip-hop by recruiting south’s Primo a.k.a 9th Wonder, Murs has been consistent releasing boom-bap inspired hip-hop in a time where everyone else is running the other direction.
The respect for his grind and uncompromising demeanor is a model that many artists should follow proving that you don’t have to sacrifice your sound to be successful. In between running the Paid Dues tour he finds ways to put out new music almost every year and this project is as good as any that he’s released.
The opening song “Fornever” features a Kurupt who hasn’t sounded this care free since the original Death Row days (you know, before the label got all scary and shit). 9th Wonder also gets behind the mic (going under the moniker 9thmatic) on “Asian Girl” over am eastern-inspired sample and chants of “looking for my asian girl.”
At times things leave a little more to be desired like “Let Me Talk” featuring Suga Free (imagine if Kat Williams decided to rap). His verse was too off random and off that I confused it with him just talking before I realized it was a verse.
Small missteps aside, you know what to expect from a Murs project: Beats and rhymes and these days that’s more than enough to ask for. Some collaborations tend to produce fruit, and this is one of them. The album sounds like everyone involved are having fun and that’s what we want our artists to be able to do. -PJ
