Review: 9th Wonder "The Wonder Years"

It’s been a decade since Little Brother came onto the scene and producer 9th Wonder immediately became a production star. The ability to make boom-bap production and get commercial critical acclaim was a feat that hasn’t been met since hip-hop’s glory years of people like his counterparts DJ Premier, Pete Rock and more.

Now, heading his own label Jamla records and more credentials than a little bit on his resume, 9th puts out ‘Wonder Years’, a smorgasbord of his artists, independent hip-hop elite and soul artists.

The album starts off with 9th’s autobiographical verse on “Make It Big” with fellow producer-turned-rapper for the song Khrysis. The song immediately made it clear that 9th is completely comfortable in his skin.

Some of the key records on the album include “Band Practice” with a newly squashed beef with Phonte and Median going back and fourth over one of the album’s strongest cuts.

“No Pretending” featuring Raekwon & Big Remo, “Enjoy” with Warren G., Murs and Kendrick Lamar and “Peanut Butter & Jelly” with Marsha Ambrosius are clear examples of 9th’s ability to have a variety of work. The ability to comfortably make backdrops for soul music, hip-hop and even pop records with ease, a feat rarely seen.

For 9th Wonder, the future could only be brighter. A list of accomplishments including parent, producer, professor, label exec could in the near future have one of the greats included on the list. -PJ

Review: Phonte "Charity Starts At Home"

When Little Brother came onto the scene almost ten years ago, two things were obvious: 9th Wonder had the potential to be one of the most influential producers in modern hip-hop and Phonte was an absolute star. Phonte had the uncanny ability to master the art of being a voice for the every man while being one of the cleverest wordsmiths making it seem so effortless.

Years followed and Little Brother not only disbanded but Phonte semi-retired rapping by almost exclusively singing for his outfit the Foreign Exchange. But finally after being a Grammy Nominated artist and squashing a beef with 9th, Phonte puts out Charity Starts At Home.

In short the album is damn near perfect. A excellent blend of lyricism and grown man singles that talk about real relationships and raising children. Key standout records like “Life of Kings” featuring Big K.R.I.T and Evidence and “Not Here Anymore” featuring Elzhi, does nothing but make you wonder what other classics could have been made if 9th and Phonte stopped beefing sooner.

The album not only shows Phonte in top form lyrically but also shows him as comfortable as we’ve seen him, a type of confidence being in the game over ten years can offer.

Hands down this project is probably the album of the year (I say that until I hear Yelawolf and KRIT’s major release). Regardless of its end of year placement, by it going on the Billboard 200 list in the first week with sales shows not only confidence in independent music but also faith that strong hip-hop records still have a fan base out there. -PJ

There’s some people that can sing, and then there’s people that can saiing. Columbia/Atlanta based artist Nikkiya is of the latter group gracing vocals for artists from Yelawolf to Tech N9ne. Now, she’s ready with her solo project Speakher, a smorgasbord of her influences of soul, gospel, funk, rock and all else in between. She takes a break from her busy schedule to have a few words with MBS. Enjoy.

MBS: Tell us where ya from.

Nikkiya:I’m from Columbia, South Carolina by way of this awesome globe.

MBS: Tell us how you first got involved with music.

N: I can remember my first recording I did with my step dad when I was a little girl. It was a choir prayer worship team kind of thing. We recorded on tape. So, as I got older I knew I wanted to sing. I ended up hooking up with Will Power through a friend of mine that worked with him. I would drive by his studio in Columbia (South Carolina) to see if his car was there and once I saw it I came and sat in a session. I had some ideas and performed and it was a wrap.

MBS: Tell us about the Speakher project.

N: It’s a collection of me speaking my mind. I lived in Italy for six years, Guam etc. It has that Euro-pop, electric vibe. But I came to the Carolinas as a teenager and my dad’s side of the family is religious, so that’s all about who I am. Everything I love comes out of the speakers, so I thought it was a really dope name.

MBS: Who do you have on the album?

N: We have MC Lyte on the record Yelawolf. The Lyte record is a really old school feel and Yela blessed us with a verse. He’s always been girding, and I’ve seen it from being his friend for ten years. It’s great to see him get his.

MBS: Lastly, so many people complain about what they don’t like about the industry/music. What do you love most about they musical experience now?

N: The grind. I love the grinding and the shining. You have to learn to love people’s flaws and I roll with flaws, let ‘em work for me. This grind is beneficial and the pain is beneficial. It’s all worth it. The pain is just as important. Just like the music, writer’s block is just as important as the songs that come easily. I love it all.
